Little Shop of Horrors

Scenic Design - April 2025

Concept Statement

Little Shop of Horrors explores the complexities of dreams and how life grants or denies these dreams in unexpected ways. This story highlights how people and places change, as they navigate the delicate balance between who they are and who they want to become. My vision for the set was to create an ever changing world that would grow as the characters strive for their dreams. The set would start out dull with little to no bright colors, much like a typical slum in New York City. For Skid Row, I wanted its streets to feel oppressive and inescapable, like the characters were suffocating in a nightmare. The towering height of the buildings combined with their perfect symmetry would evoke the feeling of being confined, just as the characters recount feeling trapped in Skid Row. When the shop comes into view it seems nothing out of the ordinary and as dull as the rest of the slum. Nevertheless, the shop's bright neon “open” sign stands out among the dreary Skid Row, representing the first omen of a brighter future. After the appearance of Audrey II, things seem to take a shift for the better. We now see the once barren window display of the shop flourishing with life and the once dull Skid Row is now thriving with new life. Still, this new life comes at a high price. It comes at the price of a dentist, as cruel and malicious as anybody could see by stepping into his office. It comes at the price of a florist, whose shop now looks as good on the inside as his new sign on the outside. However, it also comes at the price of reaching your dreams. As the show reaches its conclusion, the set looks more lively than ever, but the same can’t be said for Seymour and his dreams of escaping Skid Row he once had. When one steps back to look at the picture as a whole, you begin to realize that you are still inside the box you once desired to escape, but the walls just got prettier.
